the waiting room is an experiment in internet-based social navigation. by allowing you to 'hear' the other users of this website it allows you to navigate the internet in the same way you navigate in the real world.

when we are in any area populated by other humans we instinctively use others to aid our navigation of space. you can tell how popular different places are by recognising the presence of a number of other people. this is what the waiting room aims to do online.

you can find the waiting room in the bottom frame of this site but in order for it to work you must have the shockwave plug-in installed. the waiting room will try to detect the plug-in and tell you where you can download it if it is not installed. over a 56k modem the plug-in will take around ten minutes to install.
